A Conversation with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Integrity

On the 7th of October 2020, PLF had the privilege of a dialogue with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the 4th and 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia, as part of our Oral History Series “Malaysia’s Economic Development”. Interviewers Dato Dr Vaseehar Hassan and Mr Eddin Khoo posed questions on a range of current issues, including Vision 2020, ASEAN, and – of course – the impact of COVID-19.

Here is Tun’s response to one of the questions of the interview:

Q: Of the nine benchmarks which comprise Wawasan 2020, what would you say is the most critical at this time for this time?

Well, integrity. We find that leaders now are not concerned about good governance. They are more concerned about what they get out of their posts. They become ministers because ministers get good pay, not because they can contribute. But nevertheless, they have gained positions where the return in terms of money is very good. So, we fail in that area.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad when asked what is the most critical benchmarks of the Vision 2020.
