INDEPENDENCE: A SHARED STRUGGLE, A SACRED TRUST
Malaysia’s story is one of resilience, unity, and progress. Since achieving independence in 1957, the nation has continuously strengthened its sovereignty through democratic governance, economic development, and shared national identity rooted in diversity. These three pillars have shaped Malaysia’s transformation from a newly independent nation into a modern, dynamic, and multicultural society.

The theme for PLF Merdeka Exhibition 2026 is “Independence: A Shared Struggle. A Sacred Trust”
This exhibition explores Malaysia’s journey through three interconnected themes:
- Zone 1: Foundation of Independence
Examines how independence and democracy established the foundations of a sovereign nation, empowering Malaysians to shape their own future through participation, representation, and the rule of law. - Zone 2: Economic Sovereignty
Highlights the pursuit of economic sovereignty in building national prosperity, showcasing the contributions of generations of Malaysia whose dedication, resilience, and innovation strengthened the nation’s economic independence. - Zone 3: Expressions of Independence
Celebrates the values, identity, and national spirit that emerged from independence, reflecting the unity, resilience, and cultural richness that continue to define Malaysia today.
Complementing these themes is the special exhibition, “Pioneers of Early Malaysia“, which honours the individuals and institutions whose vision, courage, expertise, and service helped shape the nation. The exhibition highlights the professionals, technocrats, and leaders who laid the foundations of modern Malaysia.
Together, these themes show how Merdeka grew beyond political freedom into a shared nation-building journey – sustained by democracy, strengthened by economic progress, and united by harmony, inclusivity, and national pride.
