Synopsis (by the editor):
Tunku In His Own Words is an attempt to chronicle the life and times of a consummate politician, an international conscience, a modern Islamist, a diplomat, a true sportsman, and not least, a genuine gentleman; and through his speeches, interviews and responses to questions from news reporters, in some small way, to define the man.

There was as many potential pitfalls as there were rewards from going through the box upon box of old pictures and clippings at the New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad’s Resource Centre – which incidentally must be the richest repository of Tunku’s words and pictures, as well as of that nation’s early years. The enormity of the task of selecting the quotes, speeches and pictures to be included was matched only by the agonising challenge of trimming down the selection so as the keep the book at a reasonable size.

It is sincerely hoped that the result in no significant way detracts from the profile of a man who embraced life wholeheartedly and with a sense of humour – and with an innate “happy disposition”, a quality which Tunku himself considered as “the thing that stands out in my favour”.
