Program Galakan Membaca 2010 “Bangsa Berilmu Teras 1Malaysia”

Program Galakan Membaca 2010, themed, “Bangsa Berilmu Teras 1Malaysia” was successfully organised by Perdana Leadership Foundation and National Library of Malaysia on 2nd October 2010. The programme’s objective was to encourage the students to search and access the information using all relevant sources available in the Perdana Library. The Opening Ceremony started with a welcoming address by the Foundation’s General Manager, Puan Zarina Abu Bakar who welcomed 80 students and 8 teachers from Tunku Kurshiah College, Seremban to the programme.

The students were then divided into 2 groups; 40 students from Form 1 & 2 and in another group, 40 students from Form 4 & 5. All were facilitated by the staff of National Library of Malaysia and Perdana Leadership Foundation and were given topics, “13 Mei 1969 & Darurat, Wawasan 2020, Penubuhan Malaysia & Pemisahan Singapura daripada Malaysia, and Dasar Ekonomi Baru (DEB)” for their research. All of the students were taught research skills, including how to access online materials at the Perdana Library.

The afternoon session started with group presentations by the students. Each group demonstrated their strengths, talents, efforts and their own creativity during their presentations. Prof. Dr. Abdul Ghafar Ismail, AmBank Group Resident Fellow for Perdana Leadership Foundation, Pn. Beghum Ulfhat Shehnaaz Amir Razli of the National Library and Pn. Suzalin Zaini Sooria representing Tunku Kurshiah College adjudicated the students’ presentations.

The programme ended with the closing address by YBhg. Dato’ Raslin b. Abu Bakar, Director-General of the National Library of Malaysia and was followed by certificates and gifts presentations for the winners of the Contest, participants and teachers. The prize for best presenter went to Ms. Noor Anisah Sulaiman who was selected from the eight presenters.

Program Galakan Membaca 2010

Themed, “Bangsa Berilmu Teras 1Malaysia”, the Program Galakan Membaca 2010 was successfully organised by the Perdana Leadership Foundation and the National Library of Malaysia on 30 March 2010, at the National Library in Kuala Lumpur. This is the third time the Foundation is organising the reading encouragement programme and the first time the National Library of Malaysia is PLF’s collaborative partner.

The one-day programme was divided into three segments; the Opening Ceremony, the Information Finding Contest and the Closing Ceremony with Special Guest, Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali. The morning session started with the welcoming speech by the Director-General of the National Library, Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Raslin bin Abu Bakar who welcomed 40 students from SMK Maxwell, SMK Bandar Baru Sentul, SMK Seri Titiwangsa and SMK Seri Ampang, four selected schools in Kuala Lumpur that the National Library had selected for the programme.

Following the welcome address was a briefing of the Information Finding Contest by the facilitators who also demonstrated the techniques of using the Library’s OPAC system to the school students. They were then divided into 4 groups and were given a topic, “Apakah yang anda fahami mengenai konsep 1Malaysia serta peranan dan sumbangan Perdana Menteri Malaysia dalam memupuk  perpaduan kaum dikalangan rakyat Malaysia ” for their group discussions. They were also encouraged to use the facilities available at the National Library as well as to access online materials from the Perdana Library with guidance and assistance of the facilitators from PLF and the National Library.

The afternoon session started with group presentations by the school students. The judges evaluated the students’ presentations, as well as the roles and contributions of past prime ministers towards national development. The students presented their ideas to the judges: Puan Zarina Abu Bakar, General Manager of Perdana Leadership Foundation, Prof. Dr. Abdul Ghafar Ismail, AmBank Group Resident Fellow at Perdana Leadership Foundation and Puan Norma Abdul Rahman of the National Library. It was a close call among the schools, who each demonstrated strengths in research, writing, creativity and presentation, but a winner did emerge from the four contenders. The best speaker was also selected from the eight presenters who showcased their communication skills to the audience and judges.

The final segment of the programme was the Closing Ceremony with the Guest of Honour, Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali. She emphasised the importance of reading, to stimulate minds and also to think of new ways to solve problems. Puan Zarina Abu Bakar represented the Foundation to deliver the closing address, emphasising the background and objectives of PLF as well as highlighting its collection of 330,000 titles and 8 million pages of digital records.

A certificate and gifts presentation was also held to announce the winners of the Contest. The best group was SMK Seri Titiwangsa and Mohd Asrol bin Abdul Kadir who is also from SMK Seri Titiwangsa was announced the best presenter of the Contest. The certificates and gifts were presented by Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
