DEWAN Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) is in the midst of preparing a new and more comprehensive Bahasa Malaysia dictionary.
Lexicography head Ratna Inzah Mohd Asri describes the new dictionary as a more detailed version of Kamus Dewan, which will not only include words and definitions but also the terminologies and use.
It will also include examples of how the words are used in sentences.
The working title for the dictionary is Kamus Besar Bahasa Melayu and it is expected to be completed in 2014.
“The dictionary is not to replace Kamus Dewan but to complement it.
“It will be comprehensive and more colourful with definitions for the dialects used in the various states in Malaysia, and with a brief history of the word and its use.”
Ratna says the team from DBP is collecting words from various texts to be inserted into the new dictionary,
“To compile the dictionary, our team goes down to the ground to talk to the various communities on the correct use of the words in their own dialects.
“After the initial research is done, the new word will be keyed into the system where it will then be analysed by linguistics experts.
“They will then decide if it is suitable to be included in the dictionary.”
